The latest trip to Kenya and Uganda has been, as usual, very demanding, but also exciting and satisfying. On this occasion, I had the pleasure of being accompanied by two stalwart companions: Anton from Oasis Church, and John from New Life Church. Both friends (like others that have accompanied me on earlier trips) proved to be invaluable in their ability to work hard and to make very positive contributions, thus help to
ensure the success of the trip.
We really appreciated your prayers, and the gift offerings that continue to come in for the Gift Day. The total has risen to £3,000; this will be of immense help, and is very encouraging.
LIVING HOPE MINISTRIES has continued to expand and, because of God's provision, on this
occasion, through the generosity of our friends, we were able to do many things:-
We distributed:-
40 Bibles in Kenya
216 Bibles in UGANDA
We gave 200 commentaries donated by a trust in Ipswich
6 Lion Bible Handbooks
6 Bible Dictionaries
We gave out hundreds of Bible studies; pictures for children to colour; and many worship tapes, all kindly donated.
We were able to pay for the installation of a telephone for the office in Kenya.
We were able to pay for some PA equipment for Living Hope Kenya.
We were able to install electricity for the host church in Kampala.
We fed, for a week, the conference delegates and provided mattresses, and provided mattresses (and evening meal) for up to 47 residents - some of whom had travelled 200 miles to hear God's Word.
This trip has proved to be expensive. As I only visit Uganda once a year, I try to be as generous as possible. I have outlined some of the details so as to enable you to appreciate the type of distribution that is made possible through your generous gifts and prayerful support. We give God all the praise.
The Kenyan days were well attended: some 140 pastors made their way to Buru Buru, and their responses and reports proved to be very encouraging. The trustees' meeting of Living Hope Kenya also proved to be very positive. The ministry is officially registered, which is a step forward. It was good to know that Pastors Joseph and Salmon would be following us to Kampala - we needed to release Bishop Stephen unexpectedly to Finland.
I also visited Pastor Moses' new church, and found they had made an
excellent start with 15-20 people, and there was a keen sense of God's presence. Moses took me to Top Radio, a Christian radio station, where I was interviewed, and subsequently offered a regular programme slot. I signed up for 15 minutes per month and, on arriving back home, I discovered that a church had been in touch with Elaine informing us that they would pay the first year's costs. PRAISE THE LORD!
The move into the media of television for our African brothers is also encouraging. We were well received at Lighthouse Television, and the programme seems to have made a distinctive contribution. We were encouraged to add a programme that would discuss the problems that Christians have to face. That is an exciting development, and needs further thought.
It was good to preach in a crusade, and see five people profess their faith in Christ, and then on Sunday, to witness a real move of the Holy Spirit with joy, as the Lord touched people's lives.
The Kyebando conference saw 283 leaders attend, plus a few extra friends from the churches. Over 90 churches were represented from Kampala and from up-country, and we managed to give an overview of the Bible, moving from Genesis to
Revelation, from Monday to Saturday! The Lord's presence was there to heal and comfort
those handling many hurts and illnesses, and it was moving to see many leaders in a circle holding hands, and praying for each other.
The Amin years of repression, betrayal and dreadful suffering have taken their toll upon the church. The need for trust among leaders is paramount if we are to see this aids and pverty-riven nation healed, and many more saved.
None of this work could be accomplished if it were not for the Christian support from people like yourselves. I thank God for your support.
