Area 943,000 sq. km. Most people live in the better watered plateaus
of the south and west. Much of the north and west is desert. Only
9.5% of the land is cultivated.

Capital: Dar es Salaam 1,500,000. Urbanization
27%. Christian: 51%
Economy: Agricultural subsistence economy. Inefficient,
centralised bureaucracy, an over-zealous nationalization of
businesses, and collectivization of rural communities into Ujamaa
villages have led to costly failure. Foreign investment has
dried up and inefficiency and corruption have led to a run-down
of industry, agriculture and infrastructure and a serious reduction
of living standards. Liberalizations first in Zanzibar and then
on the mainland are gradually bringing improvements. Public
debt/person $192. Income/person $120 (0.5% of USA).
Politics: Tanganyika gained independence from Britain
in 1961, Zanzibar in 1963. The two countries united as a one-party
federal socialist republic in 1964, though Zanzibar has retained
a considerable degree of autonomy. Legislation passed in 1992
permits multi-party elections. The country has a Muslim Zanzibari
President and a Christian Prime Minister. There has been considerable
pressure by Zanzibar for more privileges and even political
separation from the mainland.
Religion: Religious freedom for worship and witness,
but Muslims are favoured in provision of building sites for
mosques and in the application of anti-blasphemy laws.

for bank machines and the use of traveller's cheques.

Insurance is essential.
You need to be updated with health injections. There are
also other numerous jabs that are required. Bring your medical
certificates with you.
It is essential to carry your "Yellow Fever" certificate.
This is essential for entry into the country.
First aid kit.

Prayer Points:
There is a need for training new leaders to
lead the church. There are many areas full of people that are
less reached and there has also been a growth in Islam since
1980.
Tanzania Pastor Julius writes:
Dear Rev Richard Brunton prays the Lord! How is your family?
We are progressing on well here in Arusha.
Regarding our 21st July prayers, all of us will meet at P. A.
G church from morning to evening. We will fast and pray for
all items you have listed in the leaf letter we have just received.
Looking forward to hear from you. God bless you and thanks.
Julius Makorani LHM Co-ordinator
Pray for the preaching of the gospel to be accompanied with
great power. Pray for churches to grow rather than people move
from church to church. For more leaders to be trained and equipped
to become spiritual statesmen in the nation
